‘Mini’ Conference with ‘Maxi’ Results

by Becky Crum

On March 20th, I attended my first writer’s retreat. It was a one day mini-conference for the SCBWI members in my community. It’s hard to describe the thrill of being around others who share the joy of using their imaginations to create worlds painted with creative words.

I spent an entire day surrounded by exceptionally talented people who take ordinary occurrences and through the use of word play, actions and dialogue build visual images to make stories spring to life. I sympathized with them, laughed with them, and traveled with them to make-believe worlds without ever leaving my seat. The experience left me fully energized and ready to try new ideas and techniques in my writing.

Everybody shared their writing experiences, their frustrations and their mistakes with the group. One thing I learned is that each of us has the same feelings of doubt and the desire to have our work accepted by others. The best advice I received is to read everything you can and write as often as possible. Write what you know and don’t be afraid to try new areas of writing. There’s always ways to improve and market what you write.

We took turns sharing material for the group to critique. I passed out the first six pages of my young adult novel. The feedback that I received was fantastic. I learned several ways that I could improve the quality of the story and build unique voices for my characters.

The editor shared what she looks for in material that she receives. The basic rules are to follow the guidelines of the publication you are submitting to and create exciting dialogue enhanced with vivid descriptions that will take the reader into the story and keep them interested.

Attending seminars and conferences for writers is the best way to strengthen your self image and motivate your mind. When doubt and frustration cloud belief in yourself, I believe there is no better ‘medicine’ than to converse with other writers!
